I am excited to announce that, over the next year or so, I will be repairing broken plates or bowls from some of the most outstanding restaurants in the United Kingdom, and then auctioning them in aid of Cancer Research UK.
Participating Restaurants … so far:
The idea came after I had offered to repair some chipped plates for Kol in London. Unsure that kintsugi would be right for Kol with its Mexican heritage, I was delighted when the repaired plates were so well received, not least because the gold chimed with Aztec tradition. I realised then that, although kintsugi is Japanese by tradition, most cultures have some connection with gold or other metals and that kintsugi is relevant to many different cultures.
More than that, kintsugi’s core values of sustainability, transience and finding beauty in imperfection, of honouring scars rather than hiding them, highlights that what was once broken can become more beautiful, and much stronger. It is a wonderful metaphor for life – and not least, for those of us living with cancer.
Many of us have magical memories of a lunch or dinner, often to celebrate a special occasion. I am hoping that these pieces will become links to those memories and we can raise a significant amount for Cancer Research UK.
