Traditional Kintsugi to raise funds for charity

At this stage in my life, I do not want to start a business. Instead, I ask for a contribution that is equal to what others would charge, the only difference is that 100% of the proceeds goes to a charity. I cover all the costs of materials used*.

This year the charity I have chosen is St Luke’s Hospice, Sheffield, my local hospice. However, if you have a preferred charity, we can discuss this.  Please contact me here if you would like to make a purchase.

* The only exception is when someone wants a piece finished in gold. Gold has become very expensive, currently 23.75 carat gold costs c.£153.50 [inc. VAT] for 1 gram; prices change daily according to gold prices.  In such a case, I may ask to be reimbursed for the gold used.

About Artists’ Brush Rests and Chopsticks Rests:

  • When you repair objects using the traditional kintsugi method, you use urushi lacquer. It is a very precious and valuable lacquer and there is often a little left over.
  • Rather than waste it, I had the idea to use it to make brush rests and chopstick rests.
  • Whilst walking my dog, I pick up twigs, bring them home, dry them slowly.
  • Then I shape and sand the twigs, leaving as much of the natural feel of the wood and bark as possible.
  • Then, over time, I use the left-over lacquer to decorate the rests.
  • Decoration can be bronze gold [brass], gold, silver or a coloured lacquer.
